Radio-Frequency Vector Magnetic Field Mapping in Magnetic Resonance Imaging

A method is presented to measure the radio-frequency (RF) vector magnetic field inside an object using resonance imaging (MRI). Conventional “B 1 mapping” in MRI can proton co-rotating component (B + ) of RF produced by a transmit coil. Here we show that repeating B mapping on same and coil at multiple (8) specific orientations with respect main magnet, magnitudes relative phases all (x, y, z) Cartesian components be determined unambiguously. We demonstrate circularly polarized volume loop tuned 123.25 MHz 3 Tesla scanner, liquid phantoms. The measurement showed axial field, which normally unmeasurable MRI, away from center measured maps both coils compared favorably numerical simulation, volumetric normalized root-mean-square difference range 7~20%. While proposed cannot applied human present, applications phantoms small animals could provide useful experimental tool validate simulation verify certain assumptions map-based electrical properties tomography (EPT).
